Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old black man, was stopped by five Memphis Police Department officers, also black, at approximately 8:30 p.m. on January 7, 2023. Police alleged that he was pulled over for reckless driving. He was reportedly about 250 feet (75 m) from his home at the time. According to police, after an initial confrontation with police, Nichols fled on foot. A second confrontation occurred when officers caught up to him and tried to arrest him. Following the confrontations, Nichols complained of shortness of breath. He was taken to the hospital and listed in critical condition, succumbing to his injuries on January 10. Relatives of Nichols claimed the officers involved were in an unmarked vehicle and that he experienced cardiac arrest and kidney failure because of officers beating him. A cause of death has not been released.
